So I figure its about time to get a new vest, and thought I would go with the trend of wearing a hip pack instead. Anyone have any suggestions? It looks like every brand has a few of their own, Im looking for one that would take care of a wade trip, and not fall apart in two seasons....

Fish pond makes a good pack....I wore the sling style pack and liked it, it was durable, held enough gear, and more comfortable than a vest. More recently have changed over to the "fanny pack" style and like it more, because it is not in your casting range of motion.

I am a big fan of the fanny pack!  If you overload the pack it can put some stress on your lower back (not good for me) but it is out of the way more, I can't put as much crap I don't need in it, and it is less hot to wear.  Fishpond has my favs.

I'm also a huge fan of the fanny pack!! William Joseph came out with a new pack called the "mag pack" its all magnetic and there are no zippers! I havent had a chance to use it on the river yet,but i have messed around with it alot here in the store. I'm sure ill end up with one when my old one breaks down.

Thanks guys,

I've been eyeballing that W and J pack, as well as one from fishpond. Looks like that will be the direction I go when my vest gives out soon.

I have to agree,

A fanny pack is much more comfortable and a lot cooler during the warmer summer months. I previously used an Orvis fanny pack(bought at Hubbard's while attending the guide academy) it worked well for me. However, once I started guiding. I found it lacked the extra room for my first aid kit and camera. The fishpond has a larger capacity and holds my camera, first aid kit and almost as much as a vest.  Vests do have their upside however. You have the added room in the form of a large back compartment for lunches, extra rain gear, or anything you may need for a long day of fishing. That being said, I guess they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

FISHPOND.  awesome product, well thought out.  I use the 'Waterdance guide' or somethin like that...2 seasons, holding up very well.  fits 3-4 medium sized boxes, etc, etc...all ya really need..

They also make a larger hip pack which i may need to upgrade to as i landed my first guide job!! Cheesy Grin Shocked

Fish pond makes a great Product! I am waiting for my Orvis pack to wear out. I have had it since 2006! Hold a lot of stuff but not as much as fish pond!

So, Congratulations on your first guide job!!!! Where are you going to be working?

Good Luck!!

I like my fishpond hip back.  I also use a Richardson chest box to hold the majority of my flies. I have enough room in my hip pack to carry a stomach pump kit and many other things to help with fly selections.  Sometimes the belt slips a bit and I need to tighten it a little. Also without my chest box it would be a little bit crowded with several fly boxes shoved in there. But all in all I like the hip pack very well..   Ron Smiley

I have been thinking about a chest box for a while now.  i just want to be able to carry more flies.  I might have to try that this summer.
