Shocked Here is a variation of a  bead head pheasant tail nymph that works very well for me in in the west as well as the eastern part of the country.(great pmd nymph) Plus it is an extremely fast tie!

 Hook: scud  size 20-14

 Body: pheasant tail fibers

 Ribbing: fine copper wire

 Tail: pheasant tail fibers

Head: irridescent caddis orange glass bead.

Instructions:

Slip the glass bead over the hook. Tie in a piece of fine copper wire. Tie in a few strands of pheasant tail at the rear of the hook shank with the tips protuding about the length of the hook point from the shank of the hook. Now wrap the pheasant tail fibers up to the bead and wrap them down with three wraps of thread. Counter wrap the fine copper wire up to the rear of the bead head. Now tie a few secure wraps behind the head, apply some head cement and you are done!
I find that the orange color gives the fly more of a lifelike appearance. I have had a lot of success with it on very selective trout. Let me know how it works for you!!

Sounds great!  I might try it with yellow beads(our pmds are quite yellow when emerging) and maybe brown or gray in larger sizes for drake nymphs.  Olive for BWOs...  Lots of options, i like it!

I have tied similar patterns with foam instead of the bead for emergers...

Thanks for the tip.  Just what I needed, more flies to tie!

A bad day fishing is still better than a good day of work.  Oh, wait, I fish for a living!
